OTH for the Best Vegan Pizza in NYC

For the price of one vegan pizza in New York City, you could ride the subway five times…round trip.

And who wants to spend that kind of money when quality is in question? Too many times, I’ve ordered a promising vegan ‘za only to be left guessing whether the cheese will be waxy and tasteless, if they’ll totally skimp on the shreds, or—my worst nightmare—leave me with a soggy, cheese-less pie altogether. Thank u, next.

Luckily, I’ve found the holy grail of vegan pizza, and it’s right in my backyard.

Two Boots Pizza is serving up mouthwatering plant-based delights with gooey cheese and alt-meat. These pie-masters know that creamy, chewy, stringy “cheese” is the stuff of vegan dreams, and they do an excellent job melting the toppings into a perfect euphoria of flavor and texture. It’s their unique recipes and top-notch ingredients that have brought Two Boots to the top of the pie charts on Yelp, Seamless, and Facebook, earning steady 4.5 and 5-star ratings. I had the chance to talk to the manager at the Williamsburg, Brooklyn location who gave me the low-down on what makes their vegan pies so popular, how COVID has impacted business, and what may be on the horizon for their gluten free offerings.

On the Hunt: It’s rare that you get a vegan pizza that is as cheesy and stringy as yours. What type of vegan cheese do you use?

Two Boots: As a base for our vegan pizzas, we use Daiya non-dairy cheese. Daiya is made from tapioca, which is what gives it its irresistible melty and stretchy quality! We also offer a vegan ricotta.

OTH: How has COVID impacted business at Two Boots in NYC and at your other locations?

TB: It varies. We have locations in LA, Baltimore, and Nashville but some of them have closed temporarily and others have closed permanently. Williamsburg just re-opened about 2 weeks ago, and the locations in Manhattan just recently reopened. The Two Boots in Manhattan and the Two Boots in Brooklyn are the same company but have different owners—the owner here is the former EVP of the one in Manhattan—so, in a way, each operates independently of the other. In Manhattan, there’s one on Avenue A and one in the West Village, and the owner of this location has Williamsburg and Park Slope, which is on 7th Avenue and 2nd Street…so two Two Boots in Brooklyn. Our owner here has an interest in Williamsburg pizza, which is especially helpful for business during a time like this.

OTH: Well it looks like you guys have been doing well here, which is great.

TB: Yes. Even though we had to close for a couple weeks, business is picking up for sure.

OTH: What’s your most popular pizza?

TB: The “V for Vegan” is very popular (shiitake mushroom, red onion, artichoke heart, basil pesto, red pepper pesto) other than the signature cheese and pepperoni, of course. Also our house slice, which is called the “Pork Store.” We use Emily’s pork sausage from Emily’s Pork Store on Graham Avenue down the street.

OTH: I love that you keep it local! Would you ever consider doing gluten free by the slice?

TB: We would consider doing that! The only issue is that it can sit around if no one orders it for a while. Also our gluten free pizza is so small (only 2 or 3 full slices) and it’s better fresh. Gluten free by the slice has been discussed, so if you want to put in a vote, we would consider adding it to our menu!

OTH: I will definitely take you up on that. Is there anything that you’d like the folks of Williamsburg to know about Two Boots?

TB: We’re open and happy to provide people with great pizza during this time. Come on by and pick up a slice!
